Planning a temple tour on the coast
The temples here are spread across three districts and roughly 250 kilometres of coastline, so the order you visit them in matters more than most people expect. A few things we have learned running these routes:
- Start early. Most kshetras have a morning and an evening darshan window with a long midday break. A 5 AM departure from Udupi gets you Dharmasthala and Kukke in one day; a 9 AM start does not.
- Group by direction, not by fame. Kollur, Murudeshwar and Gokarna run north along NH-66. Dharmasthala, Kukke and Southadka run inland. Mixing the two in a single day means a lot of driving and very little darshan.
- Allow for the queue. Dharmasthala on a weekend, Kukke during Champa Shashti, or Kollur during Navaratri can add two hours. We plan the day with that built in.
- Eat where the pilgrims eat. Dharmasthala's annadana is free and excellent. On the Kollur route the halts at Saligrama and Koteshwara are reliable.
- Carry a change of clothes if you plan to bathe at Souparnika in Kollur or at Koti Teertha in Gokarna.
