Which one should you pick?
Depends entirely on who is in the vehicle. A few honest recommendations:
- With small children: Pilikula Nisargadhama near Mangaluru is the single best day out in the region — zoo, boating, science centre and planetarium in one place. Closer to home, Malpe Beach has enough going on to fill an evening.
- With elderly parents: Manipal End Point, Kaup lighthouse and Maravanthe need almost no walking. Skip Kudlu Theertha and Unchalli, which involve real treks.
- For photographs: St. Mary's Island, the Rudra Shile rocks at Someshwara, Yana's monoliths and Mirjan Fort.
- Just after the monsoon: the falls — Jomlu Theertha, Didupe, Unchalli and Jog are at their best between September and January.
- For a long scenic drive: the NH-66 stretch at Maravanthe, the Agumbe ghat, or Charmadi. Worth booking a driver precisely so you can look out of the window.
Most of these combine well with a temple visit — Malpe with Vadabhandeshwara, Murudeshwar beach with the temple above it, Kollur with Kodachadri. Tell us how long you have and we will build the day around it.
